When disaster strikes, it is local churches that provide the first response to their communities. This basic understanding—that disaster response is local—forms the foundation for UMCOR’s US disaster training and response.
What does it take?
Teams of people from United Methodist Churches in the Western North Carolina Conference invited by the host conferences are working in many parts of our state, nation and world helping people recover from disasters.
If you would like to be part of such a team, contact your pastor or your District Disaster Response Coordinator. You may also volunteer to join with other teams from within your District or our Conference. A passion to serve, fair physical health, and training certification are the only requirements. Perhaps the most important task in disaster response is the Christian relationship formed in helping others recover from the disaster. We are not only called to be the hands and feet of Jesus but also to listen as Jesus listens.
