Change the World Discussion Guide
Prepared for the Uwharrie District,
WNCCUMC | 2019-2020
Throughout the Uwharrie District, we want to encourage small groups to discuss Change the World: Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus, by Mike Slaughter. This book helps us rethink how the church engages with the local community and the world. Readers are challenged with thinking about how local churches can have a missional focus in these areas: disciple making, small groups, growth, budgets, and decision making.
Our goal is to have 25% of the District average worship attendance participate in these discussions. Here are some ideas on how pastors, lay leaders, mission/outreach chairs, and Christian educators might host or encourage book discussions:
Within Missional Networks:
Pastors discuss the book over several weeks or all at once
Mission/outreach chairs gather to discuss the book over a few weeks
Host a daytime and evening discussion for a group of churches
Sunday School classes discuss over a period of weeks
Mission/outreach team reads and discusses
Administrative Council reads and discusses
Within the District:
Daytime discussion at the District Office
Facebook group discussion
People that participate in a discussion will then have the opportunity to apply, on behalf of their church, for up to $500 from the Uwharrie Mission Engagement Team. These mini-grants provide the opportunity for 10 churches to “try out” a new idea that might come from Change the World discussions.
Contact Rev. Kris Mares, Uwharrie Coordinator of Mission Engagement, at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions and to share about how your church is having their Change the World discussion!
